Awareness

Domestic Violence is a huge issue:

"every week two women are murdered in England and Wales by their current or former partner" Home Office.

"one in four women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives", British Crime Survey.

There are many agencies which are working to help those experiencing this terrible situation, some of them specialise in assisting those reporting domestic violence, others offer help and advice as part of their overall, wider, service: the local ones are listed in the Support and Advice section.

Despite the help available, research has shown that, on average a woman will experience 35 incidents of domestic abuse before seeking help. (Yearnshire, S. Analysis of Cohort, 1997).

The reasons for this delay may be many... fear of what her abuser may do, not wanting to disrupt the family home, shame at revealing what many still believe to be a taboo subject. Whatever, the reasons it is crucial that when a woman does decide to report her experiences she is treated seriously and given all the help available. Even if she has reported the violence before and then returned to her abuser it is vital that she is not turned away or embarrassed, there may be many pressures acting upon her to stay with her abuser, it does not mean the violence is not serious.

Men Experiencing Domestic Abuse

Many people question whether men are experiencing domestic violence and what is done to help them. Statistics indicate that most domestic violence is male on female, in addition men report feeling less frightened and upset by the violence and are less likely to seek medical attention. This is not to denigrate the distressing experiences which some men have endured. Most of the agencies listed in the directory will offer support and advice to men in this situation, however, people should be aware that most of the domestic violence agencies, listed in the specialist section, are women only organisations. Some advice for men is given in the men section of the directory.

For lots of facts, statistics and advice about domestic violence people should visit the websites listed in the useful link's section of this website.
